Spotlight: Prime Roots

Meet Prime Roots… bringing plant-based to deli culture and the “#SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day” for September 26.

Prime Roots is a plant-based meat company taking a fresh take on old world deli and charcuterie. Based in Berkeley, California, Prime Roots specializes in crafting plant-based meat and seafood alternatives using koji, a type of fungus traditionally used in fermentation. Prime Roots, Co-founder and CEO Kimberlie Le worked with award-winning chefs to develop the first of its kind deli classics—including cracked pepper koji-turkey, black forest koji-ham, koji-salami, and koji-pepperoni, koji-bacon to emulate the savory, meaty taste, and texture that consumers demand for meat substitutes.

CLAIMS TO FAME: In early 2024, Prime Roots was featured as an innovation at the deli counter in the final episode 4 of the "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment" docuseries on Netflix (https://lnkd.in/guJ5Axbr).. Partners include Earth Fare, where Prime Roots products have launched across all their stores and are on track to becoming 20% of the deli category. Prime Roots recently was honored with a Nexty Editors' Choice Award, the Food & Wine Magazine Game Changers Award and Fast Company World Changing Ideas Award.

In their words…
“Prime Roots was founded in the hopes of speaking to the 96% of people who still eat meat, but want to make better choices with the food they consume…. Prime Roots aims to create Koji Meats that are delicious and easy to swap into every type of diet, because we believe that collective small actions can end up making the biggest impact.”
