Spotlight: Compass Group

Meet Compass Group… helping support a healthy diet within a sustainable food system, and the “#SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day” for March 4.

Compass Group is one of the world’s largest food service and support services companies, operating in over 40 countries. Headquartered in the UK, the company serves diverse sectors, including corporate dining, healthcare, education, sports venues, and remote work sites. Its portfolio includes well-known brands such as Bon Appétit Management Company, Eurest, Chartwells, and Levy Restaurants.

In addition to promoting regenerative agriculture and waste-reduction efforts, the company is driving change by actively promoting plant-forward dining initiatives across its global operations to enhance sustainability and encourage healthier eating habits. In the United States, Compass Group’s subsidiary, Eurest USA, has partnered with plant-based food companies to introduce vegan options across its services, implemented strategies such as positioning plant-based options before meat dishes on menus and counters and developed educational programs, such as Virtual Teaching Kitchen classes, that focus on sustainable, plant-forward meals. Chartwells, a sector of Compass Group, has been proactively advancing plant-based dining across various educational settings. In higher education, Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services unveiled “Planet Eats,” a climate-friendly, healthy, and plant-forward residential dining experience, enabling campuses to implement options ranging from temporary pop-up events to fully dedicated plant-based dining halls. In the K-12 segment, Chartwells introduced the “Veg Out” program, responding to a survey indicating that one in three school-age students consider vegetarian or vegan options important when choosing lunch. The Bon Appétit Management Company created the Low Carbon Lifestyle, a new set of commitments to continue their dedication to reducing the climate-changing impacts of food choices, including by prioritizing plant-based proteins. Compass Group also is working with the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development on the Positive Consumption action area, including developing a behavior-change toolkit to encourage the consumption of nutritious, plant-forward foods and support food-system transformation.
