Spotlight: Misfit Markets
Meet Misfits Market… tackler of food waste and the #SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day for June 16.
Misfits Market is an online grocery platform tackling food waste and affordability by connecting farmers and producers with people who know that good food comes in all shapes and sizes. What started in 2018 with quirky-looking fruits and vegetables has grown into a full-scale digital grocery offering, including pantry staples, snacks, meats and dairy — all sourced from suppliers with surplus inventory, approaching sell-by dates or cosmetic flaws. With flexible subscriptions and à la carte shopping, Misfits Market helps consumers access affordable, high-quality food while helping break the cycle of food waste.
At the heart of Misfits Market is a commitment to reducing systemic food waste at the farm, in the food supply chain and in our homes. As Project Drawdown and others see saving food from going to waste as one of the most effective ways to curb climate change, Misfits Market is helping by rescuing products that would otherwise be discarded — often for reasons that have nothing to do with quality. Its streamlined, direct-to-consumer model also cuts down on transportation-related emissions and packaging waste compared to conventional grocery supply chains. The company also empowers consumers through its blog for food waste-reducing how-tos, recipes, ingredient guides and more.
Through its efforts and the help of its customers, the company estimates it is rescuing 500,000 pounds of food every week.
