Spotlight: Extreme E

Meet Extreme E… purpose-driven racing series and the “#SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day” for October 30.

Extreme E is an electric off-road racing series that combines motorsport with a mission to raise awareness about climate change. Founded by the same team that launched Formula E, Extreme E brings electric SUV racing to remote, environmentally vulnerable locations around the world, such as deserts, glaciers, rainforests, and coastal areas. Featuring eight teams each consisting of one male and one female driver racing at each event, Extreme E is highlighting the specific environmental challenges faced by the host region and aiming to educate global audiences about the impact of climate change on diverse ecosystems.

Sustainability initiatives are at the heart of Extreme E’s mission, making it a pioneering force in environmentally conscious motorsport and sport overall. The series operates entirely with electric vehicles (adding Extreme H with hydrogen in 2025) to promote clean energy and demonstrate the potential of zero-emission transportation in challenging terrains. The races are designed with a minimal on-site spectator model, focusing instead on a broadcast and digital audience to reduce the environmental footprint associated with travel and live event logistics. Extreme E employs a variety of sustainability measures, such as powering events with a hydrogen fuel cell generator and using the RMS St. Helena—a repurposed Royal Mail Ship—to transport cars, staff, and equipment across locations with an estimated 75% reduced emissions vs air freight. Additionally, the series engages viewers through its collaboration with Count Us In, through which fans are encouraged to take individual climate actions by pledging to adopt sustainable habits. Extreme E not only raises awareness but also partners with environmental organizations such as The Nature Conservancy to support legacy projects that benefit local communities, such as reforestation and coastal restoration, fostering spectator engagement and positive environmental impact long after the race ends.
