Spotlight: Green Football Weekend
Meet Green Football Weekend… the award-winning, UK football fan-engaging initiative of Count Us In and the “#SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day” for October 17.
Green Football Weekend is an annual initiative that brings together football (soccer for the Americans) clubs, fans, players, broadcasters and communities across the UK to take part in collective action in support of climate and nature. The initiative is led by Count Us In, a global initiative that aims to mobilize one billion people to take practical steps to reduce their carbon footprint and inspire broader climate action through individual and collective commitments. Green Football Weekend was recently named Campaign of the Year Award Winner by the British Association for Sustainable Sport (https://tinyurl.com/msf77c7e).
Launched to encourage collective action against climate change, Green Football Weekend promotes eco-friendly practices both on and off the pitch. Clubs are encouraged to engage in sustainable efforts, such as reducing energy use in stadiums, promoting plant-based food options, and minimizing travel emissions. Fans are also invited to participate by making environmentally conscious decisions, such as taking public transportation to games, reducing plastic usage, and switching to renewable energy at home. As part of the campaign, football clubs often compete to see which team can drive the most sustainable actions among their fanbases. The initiative also spotlights the broader environmental impacts of the sports industry and aims to use the platform of football to advocate for wider climate action.
