Spotlight: Outerknown

Meet Outerknown… “leading the revolution in sustainable apparel” and the #SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day for December 5.

Outerknown is a California-based apparel brand founded in 2015 by professional surfer Kelly Slater and designer John Moore. Offering a range of clothing for men and women, including casualwear, outerwear, and accessories, Outerknown’s clothing is created with high-quality, long-lasting materials and is made in a way that protects our planet’s natural resources while providing fair wages to factory workers.

Sustainability is at the core of Outerknown’s mission, with a focus on environmental stewardship and ethical manufacturing. Outerknown prioritizes using “preferred fiber,” including organic, recycled, and regenerative materials, such as organic cotton and Econyl. The brand has eight facilities running on renewable energy. Outerknown is contributing to the circular fashion economy through initiatives such as their “Outerworn” resale program, which encourages customers to buy and trade in gently used items to keep apparel out of landfills and in the loop. The company also was one of the first to achieve full Fair Labor Association accreditation, ensuring that workers in the supply chain are treated fairly and work under safe conditions. These efforts showcase Outerknown’s dedication to protecting the planet while fostering a conscious consumer community.
